Colonoscopy preparation - how does that stuff clean you out so much???

During my colonoscopy preparation, I did the fasting and took the laxatives no problem, but drinking that 2 gallon mixture was horrible. How does all that liquid that you drink end up coming out through your colon and not just making you urinate, like when you drink a regular gl of water???
