China... is it a safe place to travel ?

My son has the chance to go to China next year as part of a school excursion for 12 days they will see many of the countries beautiful sights and historic places I see this as a wonderful opportunity BUT as a mother am feeling a bit of concern for safety reasons. Are my concerns unjustified ? if you live in China or have traveled there please fill me in on your experiences within the country.
